I bought an Acer laptop last week and it came loaded with Vista Home Basic (very cheap laptop). I'm not terribly impressed with Vista Home Basic so I put Xubuntu on it which is like getting out of an American SUV and onto a Japanese motorcycle. Anyway, it's now dual boot and the partition I put Xubuntu on was already there when I bought the computer. It was (apparently) empty and called DATA or D: in MS speak. Now I'm thinking of ditching Vista and its 12gb recovery partition altogether but I feel that as I paid for it I am legally entitled to it. So if I was to, say, download the OEM Home Basic disc .iso and use the Product Key to try and install it on my much more powerful desktop does anyone know if the product key will work. Or does it have to be the original Acer OEM copy. PS. I tried to create a Vista recovery DVD, but this was after I installed Xubuntu and Vista refused, saying that it couldn't find D:. I then tried to put an empty USB flash drive in as D: and create it then but Vista refused giving me an 'unknown error'. Anyway, I don't really want Acer's horrible memory leaking apps and I don't intend to use Vista on this laptop because it only has 1gb or ram and Vista uses 85% of it with no applications loaded!
